If I was standing with those three figures pointing skyward, one of them might say, "how do we get to the top?" If you pull out a map of the big apple, the path is simple. Al those people would have to do is walk up from Harlem to Madison avenue at the South end of Central Park, that would put them at the top of the world in the late 20s, Manhatten.
The purpose of this picture was to illustrate the distance between middle class blacks in New York and the white high life they still were excluded from. The slaves at the bottom of the picture show just how far Black Society in NYC had come as well.
The picture embodies the time period quite well. It describes the long journey to financial stability of Harlem and the perserverence needed for the journey ahead.
